Janalee, mom of two daughters, ages 5 and 7; and a freelance writer
I am the writer/owner of ‘MA! motherhood with attitude.’ The artist/owner of our company, Tiffany, will add her two cents on this blog now and then, as well. Tiffany and I often talk about the struggle to earn a buck through our freelancing as we also try to make the ‘MA! dream’ come true. Our mission is to expose ‘perfect parenting propaganda’ for what it is: hogwash! We adore imperfect parents (and embrace the fact that we are among them.)

Toe Jam

October 15, 2008 — janalee @ 12:32 pm

I just have to know if any other moms feel the same insta-reaction that I do sometimes. A couple of days ago, Delaney was sitting on the counter ‘helping’ me. Unbeknownst to me, she had wormed her little toe between a lower cabinet and the dishwasher.  Soooo, when I opened the cabinet, it smashed her toe. She screamed her fool head off. (Seriously, she could do movie screams.)

Yes, I hugged her and asked if she was ok.  I rocked her and soothed her. But inside, I was thinking, “You idiot! What the hell were you doing with your toe there in the first place?”

Sometimes I am faced with the worst reflection of myself…

  1. If I am perfectly honest, my insta-reaction is very often, “SERIOUSLY?!? Come ON! What is WRONG with you?”

    DOH!

On particularly bad days, I have actually vocalized the “Come ON!” part.

Just for clarification, these feelings only arose sometime *after* the ZBoys were both 4 years or older. You know, when they should “know better.”

  4. I am surprised you don’t hear my reactions all the from down South! Now-a-days, the girls hear my insta-thoughts clearly and then the one that is not hurt is laughing at the one that is hurt! Just wait until they are older, you will see!
Seph, well, I just grab and hug and pray it is just a minor thing….Be thankful for your insta-reaction…they are and get to be ‘normal’.

  5. Laughing and laughing because I SO appreciate your honesty here. Your words (that you were able to keep yourself) were my words exactly. For me, sometimes I can keep them in, and sometimes they just spill out. THANK YOU, again and again, for your honesty. It’s what I love and appreciate so much about your whole way of doing business. THANK YOU!
