Hillary: Mom of three, one of whom has autism
Ask me how to strap a giant whale to my minivan and drive 1600 miles home with it! I'll tell you how. Ask me to define the word sharing. It's different than what you might expect. Ask me how to get your child to learn there's more to life than pb&j. Wait, don't ask me that. Ask me what it's like to have an autistic child. I'll try to help you understand. Ask me to show you my Mom of the Year award! Oops, usually I'm out of the running for that about 10 minutes after getting out of bed. Yet, it's all good. Sure, the paycheck is lost in the mail but I still wouldn't trade this life, quirks and all. In my posts, I'm hoping you'll find humor and honesty and that you'll be able to relate to my humble acceptance of motherhood's ups, downs and in betweens. Welcome to my world!

The Greenest Family on the Block (or Um, oops, part 2)

January 4, 2009 — Hillary @ 11:14 am

My oldest son, Logan, who is eight, bestowed an unusual honor on me and my husband yesterday.
He was watching the recycling truck come through our street, mainly because as a very serious Type A child, he was afraid that they wouldn’t take our Christmas tree, which was lying next to the blue plastic box holding all of our recyclables.

“Mom,” he suddenly said, thoughtfully. “I bet the recycling guys really like you and Dad.”

I immediately knew where this was going. It doesn’t take rocket science to figure it out, especially since just a few minutes before, I’d actually had the exact opposite thought as I’d walked past the recycling box on the way to the mailbox.  But I was amused anyway, so I humored the little guy.

“Oh yeah?” I said. “What makes you think that?”

“Well, because you guys have more stuff in the box than any of our neighbors! That makes the recycling people happy, right?”

By now the truck had come to a screeching halt right in front of our house and the clink clink clinkingof glass had begun to ring out, echoing through the neighborhood. The boy is right. Wow, listen to all that clinking glass. Again and again. Just from our box. Yes, definately we are doing our part for the environment alright. That is a very good way of looking at it.

“And when we talk about recycling at school, I always tell about our box having the most bottles.” Oh, you tell that to your teacher, do you? I’ll never look her in the eye again.

“So do you think that the recycling guys will come here someday and give you a trophy for having the most to recycle?” He’d seen something similar happen to a family while watching The Weather Channel once.

“It is indeed very possible that they might do just that,” I reply.  I can think of several other, um, awards that they might have for us. And if they’re ever thirsty and it’s near quitting time, I’m quite sure they know where to go, as well.

And hey, they took our tree, too! The greenest family in town, that is us.

  1. HAHAHAHAAAA! :) Every time we go to the grocery store, Anna starts screaming, “I want to go to the LIQUOR STORE RIGHT NOW!” She just wants her lollipop at checkout, but… yeesh.

  2. WAH-HA! Well, when I drive by a recycling bin loaded with bottles, I only think, “I could party with those folks.”

  3. LOL. Nice, we were at one of Ian’s oncology appointments one time and I had a soda and Ian said, “Mommy likes soda, but Daddy doesn’t.”. His Nurse said, “What does Daddy like?” Ian said, “Beer!” After a giggle from the adults in the room, the nurse asked, “What kind of beer does Daddy like?” Ian said with the straight face only a 3 year old can muster…”Wine!”. Gotta love this age.

  4. This is so perfect! Only Logan would have the sweetness to think you guys were the best recyclers on the block! If you all would get the first place award I am quite sure we would run a very close second. Thanks for the laugh – I needed it.

  5. I hear ya!!!! I think we’d be neck-and-neck in a heh-hem ‘recycling’ contest.
They had a can drive at school recently, for aluminum cans, I had to talk my 7-year-old out of that idea toute-suite, can you imagine giving my 2nd grader a huge bag of beer cans to proudly take to school???
    Gad.
